Another Papercut & A Lot Of Snow

I decided to make a "creature" that I had conceptualized a few years ago, a skeletal butterfly. If you haven't noticed, I'm kind of obsessed with bones and the idea of them. I still love the idea of making one out of real bones but till then, paper cuts are fun and faster than sewing. I plan on doing some photo compositions with the finished piece but I took a snapshot this morning since I'll have to set it aside to finish some other projects. Here it is:

The loops are meant to be rib bones. I want to make other variations when I find time too.

And yes, there's a lot of snow behind that butterfly. Quite a bit came down last night.

Another Awesome "Pimped" Lawn

I know it's a day late but I had to share this awesome "pimped" lawn. I love the resourcefulness! I don't know these people but I like them.



I just wish their trashcans weren't in the way so I could get a clearer shot.

Halloweeny

 Happy Halloween! Today's sky was beautiful, see:

 

Gold and blue. October skies are some of the best.

I went to a party yesterday, (I'm working tonight) and got dressed up too. No real character, just masquerade style for fun. I didn't have time to take good pictures though, in fact I was in a real rush because I hadn't realized how late it had gotten while finishing off a "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" marathon I had started while I was sick.

I'm veeery disappointed- I lost my mask! I think it got misplaced after someone asked to try it on, I was wearing it for most of the night. At that point it was very late and very dark. I had a good time otherwise, *shrugs* still sad though.

The mask is from Tom Banwell There are some really beautiful pieces in his Etsy shop. And, I will say that while it was fun to wear, it felt a little stiffer and more raw around the edges than I imagined it would. Also, I think I should have gotten an ear to ear piece to hide the elastic band better (for illusion and maybe comfort).

I made the dress in my junior year of high school. It was a little different though, not as poofy, longer and the top portion didn't fit the same and was higher and less shaped. I made some alterations to it (the tweaking I mentioned before) and I think now, almost 8 years later, it looks more as I had intended except a little shorter than I would have worn it before. It was the first piece of clothing I had ever made.

Well, off to work for me but I hope the rest of you get a lot of candy ;)

Toxicity of the City

I just rebought a pro Flickr. I've had a flickr account for years and there weren't nearly this many organizational tools when I last had a pro account so now I'm masochistically going through the whole thing.
I'm finding I like making sets based on place but that I haven't uploaded much in the past year so I think I'll back catalog some of it.

Here though are some photos from just a few weeks ago:



In the distance, you can see the cranes working on the pier. There's supposed to be a ferry that will go from Manhattan to Greenpoint once construction is complete.





Too bad they never bothered to clean up the waste and oil from a few decades ago.

Bone Box and "Plague" In Progress

This weekend was more about going out in the light of day than making anything (or finishing for that matter) but I did manage a few things, a lot of little hands were made and some organizing.

I also went to a "Snorters" meet up (for snorting dogs) and saw a crazymazing sunset. It was so crazy and amazing, I had to make up that word.

This Is A Skull And This Is A Mattress

This is a skull I made:


It's the beginning of another project I've wanted to work on but this is a big one and is under wraps for now. It'll probably take a long, long time and I don't have it all figured out yet but hopefully I can improve on the skull design a little because I'll need to make more than a few. (Btw, unrelated to Halloween.)

And this is a mattress:

The broken glass almost looks like a pile of jewels on that floral print.
That chair isn't looking nearly as good.

East River Park

Whenever I say, "I live near the East River", people give me this look and I can tell episodes of SVU pop into their heads but it's really a beautiful view (despite the old oil spill and the accusations of brain cancer).


I finally got to do a re-shoot of my two toppers and bird doll. The weather was beautiful (after several rainy days) and there was no outdoor venue to cockblock this time.


Sunset was a good time to get the shots I needed. Probably for them too.

I've been editing the photos and they'll be up soon (when I make listings) but in the mean time- if any one can tell me how I can make a seamless transition into tumblr without losing my blogger reading lists, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Finished projects and Attempted Photoshoot

I was on a real spree this morning (trying to finish projects) but by the time I was able to head out, the day was getting gloomy so I got all of 5 shots in before the park closed and I got kicked out. I definitely have to reshoot now. I didn't even get any good Mario & Princess Peach shots which was my primary goal for this outing. Ugh. I did scout a funny location for them that I will use.

The few shots I got in:

On my way to the park, it's like a cross between abandoned factory and abandoned amusement park fairytale village.


Planted "wild flowers" at East River Park.



Finally sewn in place (this morning).




But I realized I'll have to sew down his right wing (see the way it's raised in the picture >:( It kinda looks like he's leaning against that tree- but not in a good way) . I also have to finish the inside base.
What is shown is *almost* it's completed state since the addition is not visible on the outside.




Wooo, look at them! Get a room, guys.



Here is a bird I started the other day and finished this morning as well. No "real" shots but as I was passing (before rain drops began to fall), I couldn't pass up the horse head.

Labor Day Weekend & Work In Progress: Mermaid

Look closely at the birdcage below...


The door is open and it is filled with bread. It might be the laziest OR most creative bird feeder for wild birds, I haven't decided. There are also floating pigs below it.
I like this house.

And here, a rainbow in McGorlick Park:


Not a double rainbow but still filled with colorful goodness. Maybe there's a height requirement for rainbows that have gold?


Annnnddd a mermaid I'm making:


As a child I LOVED mermaids. I always meant to make one and finally started. Her tail isn't finished yet (to show you would be obscene).
Normally I wouldn't start dressing or beading until after the form was finished but it was her eyes. They said, "Forget the arms, cover me in jewels!"
I think she has one of the prettiest face I've made yet. I meant for her to be a Siren, she has a bit of a mysterious look to her. When I finish, I'll have to take some better detail shots. I really like how the beading turned out (is turning out? not sure if it's finished) and you can't tell so much here but there are bigger beads along her spine, kind of nice in a bone/textural sort of way.

Some possibilities are brewing but more on that later in it's more finalized state.:)

Gnomes

I ended up changing ideas for my mushroom.
I made a gnome to compliment it (I love gnomes!) and I'm very pleased with how he came out. I took him outside for a shoot and ended up doing a little play on the Amelie/ Travelocity gnome afterward. That "postcard" is one of those snapshots.

Going to animate the formal shoot I did (or re-shoot) but finally glad to be done-enough on one project to start formal shooting. :)
